Chamber Workshop: Hiring Interns

Internships: The Value to the Business Community

When President Timothy Sands arrived at Virginia Tech, one of the first things he requested of the local   business community through the Chamber of Commerce, was internship opportunities for Virginia Tech students. President Michael Hemphill, Radford University’s new president, has also requested engagement within the business community.

Student Perspective:
Internships can be valuable opportunities for students to apply the knowledge and skills developed in the classroom setting. Interns gain confidence in their abilities and become better positioned for employment upon graduation. Internships also allow students to clarify career goals, expand problem-solving skills and establish or enhance a network of contacts, mentors, and references that will be of value in the future.

Business Perspective:
Interns can be valuable to local businesses. Our local community does not always understand how to recruit interns or how to create the environment for a successful internship. Internships are often the best way to identify, attract, and engage talent early. Research shows that the retention rate is higher for employees who had previously interned at the company versus new hires who had not interned. To be a successful intern sponsor, know the rules, create the job description, hold an orientation, develop success metrics and meet weekly and work with the appropriate college or university departments.

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce has created a workshop and collaborative to help Virginia Tech, Radford University, and New River Community College students find internships within our community.
